  ABOUT THE EVENT

The Waggle.com Classic

In 1999, we started the Waggle.com Fall Classic charity golf tournament to raise funds for the University of Maryland, Center for Advanced Fetal Care in appreciation of the assistance rendered to one of the members of Waggle.com. This tournament grew steadily for 7 years raising over $125K in the process. In part, as a result of these efforts, more healthy babies enter this world today!

In the summer of 2006 Lefty (of Waggle.com) and his wife, helped a cancer patient in his goal of attending a game in every Major League Stadium in the time he had left on this earth. The heartbreaking story of 22 year old Jeffrey Newbauer touched lives beyond explanation. Jeffrey visited Lefty and his family in September of 2006. In just a few short days, his spirit and good will toward others (especially kids) was something to behold.

Jeff To look at Jeffrey at that time - all 270 lbs. of him, you would never think he was sick and had only a few months left to live. His friendly personality and warm handshake did little to change my perception. Sitting at the Nationals game with him and his father only made me a firm believer that his motto is absolutely correct, "Cancer sucks".

For 3 days, Jeff and his dad stayed with us. Although I was hesitant at first about spending time with a cancer patient who didn't have much time left, I can honestly say that his presence and passing just a month or so later brought me to tears simply by seeing how much he loved life and the people around him. I can't explain the good feeling in my heart from the little bit of time that I had with Jeffrey and how this young man battled cancer with so much optimism. What I can say is that I feel blessed to have spent some time with him and can only give back a portion of what he provided me.

For these reasons, 9th Annual, but newly renamed Waggle Classic will be benefitting Jeffrey's charity. One of his requests for this charity was to prevent what happened to him from happening to others. You see, Jeffrey was not diagnosed early enough to be treated and often times, because of the young age of the patients, doctors do not suspect cancer until it's too late. Jeffrey's vision is to try to correct this for future generations.

You can see Jeffrey's home page and check it out for your self at www.newbeginning.org.

As in prior years, this tournament will NOT about winning but about having some fun and raising some money for a great cause. In our ever increasing attempt to allow everyone to have a great time on the course, we've selected the "Pick your own format" for this years event. You can play your own ball (and take the best two scores from the foursome for your team score) or play a captains choice scramble (everyone plays from the best position and there is one score for the team). Also as in prior years, several winners of prizes will be awarded. What this means is that although your team may not have the lowest score, you may still win a flight!

Equal value prizes will be given out to the several flights and remember it's not whether you win or lose, the object here is to enjoy the day and help the cause!

As with all Waggle.com Charity golf tournaments, the goals are (1) to help raise money for Jeffrey's charity cause and (2) for you to enjoy REALLY yourselves on the golf course and at the event! You'll do your part by signing up as a sponsor or to play in the event. We'll do our part by providing you with a fun day of golf, good food and beverage, as well, as various other additional entertainment activities throughout the day. Waggle.com thanks you for your support!
